Past Exhibition:
Modern Animism by Nālani Sato
January 23 - February 2
Modern Animism is a documentation of the recollection of animism in everyday life here in Hawai'i. What was once part of every indigenous culture throughout the world, narratives surrounding animism are painted with ancestral mythologies which overlap with the artist’s genealogy, but in a Modern context. The boar stands on the bed. The lei and mask look like a woman checking out the stars outside the Ossipoff Cabin. The pōhaku sits on a curbside-salvaged Mid Century armchair. Modern Animism is a collection within a series titled Ancestral Muscle Reflex. It depicts subjects such as atonement, shapeshifting, resurrection and the healing arts.
Join us for the opening reception on Friday, January 29th from 5 PM — 8 PM.
